Buddha in West Oakland

This and an accompanying mural are found on Mandala Parkway and 20th Street.  It was designed by Desi, an Oakland street artist, as part of a summer program with West Oakland youth.  It is not readily apparent, but the "canvas" is an old railroad car placed on railroad ties.  I understand this is not everyone's cup of tea but it is something to consider.  You may argue whether or not it's art, but I don't think of it as a blight like tagging.

  2. Definitely a step up from tagging. Before «Louis» moved to France, he had a Pepperidge Farm distributorship and his three trucks were frequent targets of taggers. «Louis» will stop now before he goes into his rant about THAT!

  3. I think it adds much. Far better than graffiti gone wild.

  4. Wow, gorgeous!

Carolyn, you asked me for some guidance on making a photo mosaic. Here is a tutorial I wrote awhile back:

Hope to see you at Mosaic Monday soon! :)

  5. I certainly think it's art. The tagging on the top looks vaguely like Sanskrit. The question is, do any passers-by get it? And is that a can of spray paint in the Buddha's hands? Hardly a traditional pose.

By the way, my Carolyn and I would love to meet you when we're in SF next month.
